In 1967, the official merger of the companies Nokia Ab, Finnish Cable Works and Finnish Rubber Works created the global Nokia Corporation. The move to mobile communications began in 1968. But only in 1992 did Nokia focus on the telecommunication industry. The same year, the first GSM Nokia handset, the Nokia 1011, was introduced in the market.
After only 6 years since the release of the Nokia 1011, the company has become the world leader in mobile phone technology. Nokia was first to release the WAP-enabled handset and 3G phone. By 2005, the company has more than 2 billion mobile phone subscribers. Their latest handsets include the Nokia N Series.
